LIVER AWARENESS MONTH

In anticipation of all the partying that will be going on during Halloween weekend, this week's DINNER-AND-A-MOVIE theme is intended to encourage you to think before you drink.  October is National Liver Awareness Month, sponsored by the American Liver Foundation.  The D&M display at Fogelson Library includes some brochures and other information from the American Liver Foundation and the Hepatitis Foundation International.

Dinner for this weekend should include fresh vegetables and fruits, raw and cooked.  Three low-fat cookbooks are on display and there are more in the collection at call numbers RM 237.7 (upstairs) and TX 801 (with the cookbooks on the main level).

Movie selections for this week will enlighten the viewer about the effects of too much alcohol in the diet.

Days of Wine and Roses
1962, directed by Blake Edwards

Leaving Las Vegas,
1995, directed by Mike Figgis

The Lost Weekend,
1945 by Billy Wilder

And although organ meats are not, strictly speaking, on the list of best foods for a healthy liver, the more adventurous gourmets and gourmands may like to try liver recipes, available in several comprehensive cookbooks such as The Joy of Cooking, call number TX 715 .R75.  A recipe for a side dish of fava beans from Williams Sonoma's Vegetables may go well with a [very small] glass of chianti, ssssssss.
