WORLD AIDS DAY

Wednesday December 1 is World AIDS Day.

The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988 to raise awareness of  AIDS and HIV, and to gain support for finding a cure.

Artists and art communities around the world have been especially active in raising awareness about the disease and funds for treatment.  Due to copyright issues, artwork cannot be included here, but you can see some artwork by visiting pages at these links:

Fogelson Library is displaying a few of the books in the collection inspired by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  Come in to see our books of literature and artwork that deal with this difficult subject.

More than 25 million people died from AIDS  between 1981 and 2007.  At the end of 2009, an estimated 33.3 million people were living with the virus, a 27% increase from 1999.  Two and a half million of these people are under the age of 15.  About 270,000 children died from HIV-related complications in 2007.
