Santa Fe, N.M. and Milan, Italy—June 8, 2011—Students enrolled in the graphic design program at Santa Fe University of Art and Design can now spend one year at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano (NABA), a renowned academy of fine arts and design in Milan, Italy.  Students who successfully complete the required coursework at SFUAD and NABA will be awarded a degree in graphic design from SFUAD.  They could also receive a separate degree from NABA provided they successfully complete its degree requirements during or after their year abroad.
“In today’s global and highly competitive work environment, designers must have a diverse set of skills, interdisciplinary knowledge and the ability to adapt,” said David Grey, chair of the Graphic Design Department at Santa Fe University. “This program will expose our students to a unique academic opportunity, enriched by a truly global experience in two of the most creative, art-focused and innovative cities in the world.”
The study abroad opportunity in graphic design requires students to spend their first two years in Santa Fe mastering the tools, techniques and media required in the graphic design profession. Students will spend their third academic year at NABA, where their English-language curriculum will focus on art direction and multimedia advertising. The fourth and final year of study at Santa Fe emphasizes experimental projects in a collaborative and practical environment. Courses in both schools are taught by resident and visiting faculty members who are successful practitioners in the field of graphic design.
“Our programs at NABA are based on a cross-disciplinary method aimed at developing artistic and professional skills using a ‘learning by doing’ approach,” said Elisabetta Galasso, NABA’s Academic Director. “Students from Santa Fe University will not only be part of one of Italy’s most respected art and design training institutions, they will also be able to experience firsthand the benefits of a dynamic artistic and cultural center closely connected with the Milanese professional and social environment.”
Students who are admitted to the University’s graphic design program as freshmen in the fall of 2011 are eligible for the study abroad opportunity. Enrollment is currently open and classes start August 29.
